Wet Type Fish Feed Extruder Overview

A wet-type fish feed extruder is a professional feed processing machine that uses steam pre-conditioning to produce high-quality floating, slow-sinking, or sinking aquatic feed pellets. It’s ideal for large and medium-scale commercial aquafeed production, offering better pellet quality, higher gelatinization, and greater water stability compared to the dry-type fish feed extruders. Different from the dry type extruder, the wet type fish feed machine is equipped with a boiler that can continuously steam the materials to make fish pellets. It is a crucial machine for making high-quality fish pellets and pet food. We supply fish feed extruder machines with capacities ranging from 200 kg/h to 5,000 kg/h. Customized complete fish feed production lines are available.

Wet Type Fish Feed Machine Working Principle

    1. Pre-conditioning – A steam conditioner mixes feed ingredients with steam and moisture before extrusion, softening and partially cooking them.
    2. Feeding & Compression – The pre-conditioned material enters the extruder barrel, where a rotating screw compresses and kneads it.
    3. High-Temperature Cooking – Combined steam and mechanical friction raise the temperature to 120–160°C, fully gelatinizing starch and denaturing proteins.
    4. Extrusion & Expansion – The feed is forced through the die plate, causing a sudden pressure drop that results in expansion.
    5. Pellet Cutting – Rotary knives cut pellets to the desired length.
    6. Fish Pellet Output – Pellet density is adjustable to control buoyancy (floating, slow-sinking, or sinking).

Our Large Fish Feed Machine Advantages

Superior pellet quality – Higher starch gelatinization (90–95%) and better water stability.
Higher capacity – Suitable for industrial-scale operations.
Longer shelf life – Pellets are well-cooked and less prone to spoilage.
Customizable feed buoyancy – Floating, slow-sinking, or sinking.
Energy-efficient – Steam reduces the mechanical energy needed for cooking.
Better digestibility – Soft texture and improved nutrient absorption.

    Fish Feed Extruder Usage Tips

Steam Pressure: Keep at 0.4–0.6 MPa for consistent conditioning.
Raw Material Moisture: Adjust to 12–15% before extrusion.
Particle Size: Grind ingredients to 0.5–0.8 mm for even cooking.
Die Maintenance: Clean regularly to avoid clogging.
Startup Procedure: Heat the conditioner before feeding materials.
Shutdown Cleaning: Run inexpensive dry material (e.g., cornmeal) to clean the barrel and screw.

      Fish Feed Extruder Machine FAQs

A wet-type fish feed extruder is a machine that uses both mechanical force and steam pre-conditioning to produce high-quality floating, slow-sinking, or sinking fish feed pellets. It requires a steam boiler to inject steam into the conditioner, improving pellet digestibility, durability, and water stability.

      • Wet Type Fish Feed Machine: Uses steam before extrusion, resulting in higher starch gelatinization (90–95%), better water stability, and larger capacity. Suitable for commercial-scale production.
      • Dry Type Fish Feed Machine: Uses only frictional heat, has lower gelatinization (80–85%), and is more compact. Suitable for small to medium farms without steam boilers.
      • Higher pellet quality and digestibility.
      • Longer water stability (over 10 hours for floating feed).
      • Lower energy consumption per ton due to steam assistance.
      • Suitable for large-scale continuous production.
      1. Floating feed for surface-feeding fish (tilapia, catfish).
      2. Slow-sinking feed for mid-water fish.
      3. Sinking feed for bottom-feeding species (shrimp, crab, eel).
      4. Custom pellets for special aquaculture species.

A typical wet-type fish feed production line includes:

      • Steam boiler (for pre-conditioning).
      • Mixer (to blend raw materials).
      • Grinder/hammer mill (to reduce particle size).
      • Dryer (to remove moisture from pellets).
      • Cooler (to bring down the temperature).
      • Packaging machine (for final packing).

Yes. Operators are trained to manage:

      • Steam pressure and temperature.
      • Feed formulation adjustments.
      • Pellet buoyancy and density control.
      • Routine maintenance and troubleshooting.

      Pellet buoyancy is controlled by:

      • Adjusting steam pressure and moisture content.
      • Changing the screw configuration inside the extruder.
      • Modifying ingredient ratios in the feed formulation.

Yes. It can produce feed for shrimp, crabs, frogs, turtles, and even some pet food like dog and cat feed, depending on the formula.

Yes. By changing the die mold, you can produce round, cylindrical, or special shapes for different fish species and aquaculture requirements.

      • Choose Wet Type if you have a large-scale operation, access to steam, and need high-quality pellets for commercial sale.
      • Choose Dry Type if you have a small or medium farm, a limited budget, or no access to a steam boiler.

Yes. Wet-type fish feed extruders can make saltwater fish feed with strong water stability and high oil content to meet marine species’ dietary needs.
